Paintings in upcoming Spotlight Exhibit at West End Gallery in Corning, NY
Below are some of my newest paintings featured in the upcoming Spotlight Exhibit at the West End Gallery. Opening: April 24th
A House in the Country (nr. 12)
The cheerful red and yellow colors of this house set by the blueish contrast of the background hills seizes my attention every time I pass by. I'm often drawn to scenes that offer opportunities for contrast and love how the tree line here partially obscures and softens the hard straight lines of the house, a soothing contrast between nature and a man-made structure. On this day, the color of the siding is particularly fresh because of the reflection of the snow and the cool light. The field in the foreground was partially covered in snow, allowing me to use looser brushwork and strengthen the focus on color. |
Backyard Riverside
In a nearby town there is a lovely park with a walking path that partially follows the Tioga river. On overcast fall days, after a bit of rain and when the view is not obscured by foliage, this scene of the red shed and the cool yellow and blue house always speaks to me. I marvel over how the weary colors come to life on rainy days. The scene exudes nostalgia and the houses are intriguingly differentiated in color and accent. The saturated, yet cool red and the weathered yellow and blue are a fresh and crisp contrast with the muted surroundings and their everyday life. I typically like to start a painting on location, to capture the most important colors. Ideally a painting can be finished in one session, but typically the focus is to record the most important colors and capture information lost to a photograph. To paint this scene on location, I had to use pruning loppers to clear a path and make a workable spot. Permission had been granted weeks in advance so it was a matter of seizing the right moment. The perfect day came very late in the year and I was able to finish the most important colors just as gentle sleet set in. |
Jerseys
This farm has always been interesting to me. I love how the house sits on the hill, the old silo where pigeons live, the red barn and then there are these beautiful cows. It has been a long time challenge to capture them as their color lacks a dramatic contrast with the grass, making it very difficult to find the right scene. One day in summer I happened to be driving by in the rain when I decided to sit and watch. The rain stopped and for a short moment, I noticed how the moisture in the air saturated the colors of the cows and diffused hills in the background, finally creating the contrast I wanted to convey. |
The Horses
Sometimes when I go for a walk, I visit my neighbor's beautiful horses. Last year they got a new hay feeder. Its strong green color adds a refreshing note to the surroundings, creating contrast between old and new. It sits on a high spot in the pasture, creating a feeling of admiration when the horses gather to eat. To enhance the focus on the horses and the feeder and create a more romantic feel I used the foreground and background for looser brushwork with soft edges. |
